Bringing a Major Media Brand to Colombia
The dream gig for our in-house gearheads--producing Backpacker Magazine's 2017 Gear of the Year feature in the backyard of our Bogotá, Colombia production services office. WhereNext is the first Colombian production services company to bring a major media brand like Backpacker Magazine to Colombia for a project like this.
Transportation, Logistics, and Creative Services
WhereNext crafted a week-long video production and event package that brought the publication’s team down to Colombia for a trip across the Páramo de Ocetá high-elevation moorlands, including transportation, logistical, and creative production services.
The Director’s Point of View
WhereNext Director, Gregg Bleakney shares his experience of filming and producing in Colombia for Backpacker:
So when the email dropped in from Backpacker Magazine talking about how they wanted to produce their 2017 Gear Guide Year issue in Colombia, I was over the moon.
I've lived in Colombia for four years and when I first got here no one wanted to come to Colombia produce adventure travel projects, much less the leading story in Backpacker Magazine. WhereNext worked with our partners at Pure Colombia to build an itinerary that would really put the Backpacker team and their gear to a legitimate test. Finally we decided on the Páramo de Ocetá. A páramo is a high Andean moore generally over 3,000 meters in elevation. On any given day you can have mixed conditions. Heavy rain, freezing cold temperatures, hail--and by midday it can warm up and you can have heavy sun. The ground is always damp. It was an amazing place for Backpacker Magazine to test the gear.
It was super cool for the team at WhereNext to spend a week in the field with Backpacker and get an inside look for how they put this issue together. It's something they take seriously. Every night they'd have especially heated debates around the campstove over which gear would win the Editor's Choice awards.
No one wins easy with the Backpacker team.
It was great to see that this is a legitimate award that people actually think about. They put the gear to an extreme test. It was just fun to be part of the process and to be the first Colombian production services company to bring a major media brand like Backpacker Magazine to Colombia for a project like this.
